Emotion

reactions to a specific event or thought that help us respond to our
environment. For example, seeing a snake triggers fear (subjective), a rapid
heartbeat (physiological), and the urge to run away (behavioral).
2. What is Intelligence Quotient (I.Q.)?
Intelligence
Quotient (IQ) is a numerical score derived from standardized tests designed to
measure human intelligence. It was originally calculated as the Mental Age (MA)
divided by the Chronological Age (CA) multiplied by 100 (IQ = MA/CA × 100). For
example, a 10-year-old child with a mental age of 12 would have an IQ of 120.
Today, modern IQ tests use a deviation IQ, where 100 is the average score for a
person's age group, with a standard deviation of 15. It is used to compare an
individual's cognitive abilities to the general population.
3. What is Extrinsic Motivation /
Intrinsic Motivation?
- Intrinsic
Motivation: This
is the drive to engage in an activity for its own sake, for the internal
satisfaction, interest, or enjoyment it brings, rather than for an
external reward. For example, a student who reads books because they
genuinely love the stories and find them fascinating is intrinsically
motivated.
- Extrinsic
Motivation: This
is the drive to perform an activity to gain an external reward or avoid a
punishment. The motivation comes from outside the individual. For example,
a student who studies hard only to get a good grade or to avoid being
scolded by parents is extrinsically motivated.
4. What is meant by Fluctuation of
Attention?
Fluctuation
of attention refers to the natural, involuntary, and rhythmic shifting of focus
from the main object of attention to other stimuli and back again. It is a
normal phenomenon and is the reason why we cannot maintain a high level of
concentration on a single, uninteresting task for a long period. For example,
while listening to a long, dull lecture, you might find your mind briefly
wandering to what you will have for dinner before snapping back to the lecture.
Even in intense concentration, these minor shifts occur.
5. What is Creativity?
Creativity
is the cognitive ability to produce original, novel, and valuable ideas,
solutions, or products. It is not just about "thinking outside the
box" but also about the ability to synthesize existing knowledge in new
and useful ways. Creativity involves divergent thinking—generating many unique
solutions to a problem—as well as flexibility and originality. For example, a
student who finds a new and more efficient way to solve a math problem or an
artist who invents a new painting style is demonstrating creativity.
6. Differentiate between verbal and
non-verbal test of Intelligence.
- Verbal
Tests: These
tests require the use of language to understand instructions and provide
answers. They measure abilities like vocabulary, comprehension, reasoning,
and verbal fluency. They are dependent on the individual's literacy and
language skills. Example: The verbal sections of the Wechsler Adult

7. What is meant by Attitude? Write two

An attitude is a

(actions). For example, a student's attitude towards math might include the

9. What is Curiosity?
Curiosity

information. It is a fundamental drive that compels individuals to seek out
novel and challenging experiences. Curiosity is a key component of exploration
and learning, driving us to ask questions and investigate our environment. For
example, a child who repeatedly asks "why" is displaying curiosity,

interest.
10. What is Span of Attention?
Span
of attention refers to the number of items or stimuli an individual can grasp
or attend to at a single, fleeting moment. It is a measure of the capacity of
our immediate awareness or short-term sensory storage. For example, in a
classic demonstration, if a series of dots is flashed briefly, most people can
correctly report about 4 to 5 dots. In terms of memory, the "magical
number seven, plus or minus two" (Miller's Law) is often used to describe
the number of items a person can hold in their short-term memory at once.
11. What is Self-efficacy?
Self-efficacy
is an individual's belief in their own capacity to succeed in specific
situations or accomplish a particular task. It is a core concept in Albert
Bandura's social cognitive theory. It is not about a general sense of
confidence but about the belief that you have the ability to execute the
actions required to achieve a desired outcome. For example, a student with high
self-efficacy in math believes they can solve complex equations, so they are
more likely to take on challenging problems and persevere. Low self-efficacy
would lead them to avoid such challenges.
12. What is Locus of Control?
Locus
of control is a personality concept that refers to an individual's belief about
the underlying main causes of events in their life. Developed by Julian Rotter,
it is a continuum with two poles:
- Internal
Locus of Control: The
belief that one's own actions, efforts, and decisions determine the
outcomes of events. People with this orientation take responsibility for
their successes and failures. For example, they might say, "I passed
because I studied hard."
- External
Locus of Control: The
belief that outside forces (like luck, fate, chance, or powerful others)
determine outcomes. For example, they might say, "I failed because

Intelligence.
Emotional
Intelligence (EI), a concept popularized by Daniel Goleman, refers to the
ability to recognize, understand, manage, and effectively use emotions in
oneself and in relationships with others. It is a crucial set of skills that
often predicts success in life more accurately than Intelligence Quotient (IQ).
Goleman identified five key elements or components of Emotional Intelligence.
- Self-Awareness: This is the foundation
of EI. It is the ability to recognize and understand your own emotions,
strengths, weaknesses, values, and motives, and how they affect others. A
self-aware person knows how they feel and why they feel that way. For
example, a teacher who realizes they are feeling frustrated with a class
can acknowledge this emotion and choose to respond calmly rather than
lashing out, preventing a negative classroom atmosphere. Self-awareness

- Self-Regulation: This involves the
ability to control or redirect disruptive emotions and impulses and to

person with strong self-regulation does not make rushed, emotional
decisions. For example, a student who receives a poor grade on a test
might feel angry or disappointed. Instead of tearing up the paper or
giving up, they regulate their emotions, take a deep breath, and decide to
study harder for the next test. Self-regulation leads to trustworthiness,

- Motivation: In the context of EI,

It is the inner drive to achieve for the sake of achievement. Motivated

solution, is demonstrating this element. They have a strong drive to
achieve and a high level of initiative and optimism.
- Empathy: This is the ability to
understand the emotional makeup of other people and to treat them
according to their emotional reactions. It is the capacity to put yourself
in someone else's shoes. Empathy does not mean agreeing with everyone, but
it means understanding their perspective. For example, an empathetic
teacher notices that a usually bright student is withdrawn and struggling.

- Social
Skills: This
is the culmination of the other elements, applied to managing

2. How does Anxiety and Curiosity affect
student's motivation?
Anxiety
and curiosity are two powerful emotions that have opposite and significant
effects on a student's motivation to learn. While curiosity acts as a powerful
engine for learning, anxiety often acts as a brake, inhibiting the desire to
engage with new material.
- The
Effect of Curiosity on Motivation:
Curiosity is an intrinsic
motivator—the natural, inborn desire to know, learn, and understand. It drives
students to explore new ideas, ask questions, and persist in their studies for
the sheer pleasure of discovery.
- Enhances
Engagement: When
a student is curious about a topic, they pay more attention, process
information more deeply, and are more likely to remember what they
learned. For example, a student curious about dinosaurs will voluntarily
read books, watch documentaries, and eagerly participate in a related
class project. Their motivation comes from within.
- Promotes

force that depletes a student's cognitive resources.

anxiety consumes working memory and cognitive resources. A student
anxious about a math test cannot concentrate on the material because
their mind is preoccupied with worry ("What if I fail?"). This

Attention
Span refers
to the length of time a person can concentrate on a particular task, object, or
thought without becoming distracted. It is the capacity to maintain focused
awareness on a selected stimulus. It is a crucial cognitive function for
learning and can vary significantly between individuals and situations. While
span of attention refers to the number of items we can attend
to at once (e.g., 4-5 items), attention span refers to the duration of
focus.
Several
factors—both internal (subjective) and external (objective)—determine the
strength and duration of our attention.
Subjective
(Internal) Determinants: These
are factors related to the individual's state of mind and personality.
- Interest: This is the most
powerful internal determinant. We naturally pay attention to things that
interest us. A student passionate about history can read a historical
novel for hours without losing focus.
- Habit
and Training: Regular
practice in focusing, such as through meditation or disciplined study, can
increase one's attention span. A trained musician can concentrate on a
complex piece of music for longer than a novice.
- Motivation
and Need: A
strong need or desire to achieve something greatly enhances attention. A
medical student studying for a crucial board exam will have a longer
attention span for the material than if they were reading it casually.
- Mental
and Physical State: Physical
factors like fatigue, hunger, or illness drastically reduce attention
span. Emotional factors like anxiety or depression can also make it

a longer attention span.

(External) Determinants: These

- Intensity
of the Stimulus: Stronger,

attention. A loud sudden noise will immediately distract everyone in a
quiet library.
- Size
and Movement: Larger
objects and moving objects attract more attention than small, static ones.
A giant, flashing billboard is more attention-grabbing than a small sign.

They are not afraid of making mistakes. They often enjoy humor and

5. Briefly explain Maslow's Theory of
Motivation.
Abraham
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is one of the most well-known theories of
motivation. It is a humanistic theory that suggests human behavior is motivated
by a hierarchy of innate needs. Maslow proposed that individuals must satisfy
lower-level needs before they can be motivated to pursue higher-level needs. He
visualized this hierarchy as a pyramid, with the most fundamental needs at the
base.
- Level
1: Physiological Needs (Basic Survival): These are the most basic biological needs
required for survival, such as food, water, oxygen, sleep, and
homeostasis. Motivation to learn is virtually impossible if a student is
starving, thirsty, or exhausted. A hungry child cannot focus on a math
lesson.
- Level
2: Safety Needs: Once
physiological needs are met, the need for safety and security becomes
prominent. This includes personal security, financial security, health,
and a sense of stability and order. In a school context, this means a
safe, predictable environment free from bullying, fear, and chaos. A
student who feels threatened or unsafe in school is highly motivated to
seek safety, not education.
- Level
3: Love and Belongingness Needs (Social Needs): After safety is
achieved, the need for social interaction, friendship, love, affection,
and a sense of belonging emerges. Humans have a deep need to be accepted
by others and to feel part of a group. In the classroom, this translates
to the need for peer acceptance, positive relationships with teachers, and
a sense of being part of a class community.
- Level
4: Esteem Needs: This
level is divided into two categories: (a) the need for self-esteem
(self-respect, achievement, competence, and independence) and (b) the need
for esteem from others (recognition, status, appreciation, and
reputation). Students at this level are motivated by success, praise, and
recognition for their efforts. They want to feel capable and valued.
- Level
5: Self-Actualization Needs: This
is the highest need, which Maslow described as the desire to become
everything that one is capable of becoming. It is the drive to realize
one's full potential, to pursue personal growth, creativity, and peak
experiences. This is not about achieving fame or status but about personal
fulfillment. A student at this level is intrinsically motivated to learn
for the sheer joy of expanding their mind and mastering new skills, driven
by creativity and a desire to contribute something meaningful.
Educational
Implication: Maslow's
theory emphasizes that teachers must create a classroom environment that
addresses the lower-level needs (a safe, comfortable, and welcoming space where
students feel they belong) before they can expect students to be motivated to
achieve academic excellence (esteem and self-actualization). A student who is
ostracized by peers and lives in fear of bullying cannot be expected to be
highly motivated to learn algebra.
6. Write about Verbal tests of
Intelligence.
Verbal
tests of intelligence are psychological assessments that use language to
measure an individual's cognitive abilities. They are the most common type of
intelligence test and rely heavily on the test-taker's understanding and use of

grey one.
- Size

ones. Our visual system is wired to detect movement, as it was crucial for
spotting predators or prey. For example, in a classroom, a child standing

- Duration: The length of time a
stimulus is presented affects attention. A brief, fleeting stimulus may
