2. What is Intelligence Quotient (I.Q.)?

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is a numerical score derived from standardized tests designed to measure human intelligence. It was originally calculated as the Mental Age (MA) divided by the Chronological Age (CA) multiplied by 100 (IQ = MA/CA × 100). For example, a 10-year-old child with a mental age of 12 would have an IQ of 120. Today, modern IQ tests use a deviation IQ, where 100 is the average score for a person's age group, with a standard deviation of 15. It is used to compare an individual's cognitive abilities to the general population.

3. What is Extrinsic Motivation / Intrinsic Motivation?

For example, a student who reads books because they genuinely love the stories and find them fascinating is intrinsically motivated.

4. What is meant by Fluctuation of Attention?

Fluctuation of attention refers to the natural, involuntary, and rhythmic shifting of focus from the main object of attention to other stimuli and back again. It is a normal phenomenon and is the reason why we cannot maintain a high level of concentration on a single, uninteresting task for a long period. For example, while listening to a long, dull lecture, you might find your mind briefly wandering to what you will have for dinner before snapping back to the lecture. Even in intense concentration, these minor shifts occur.

5. What is Creativity?

Creativity is the cognitive ability to produce original, novel, and valuable ideas, solutions, or products. It is not just about "thinking outside the box" but also about the ability to synthesize existing knowledge in new and useful ways. Creativity involves divergent thinking—generating many unique solutions to a problem—as well as flexibility and originality. 6. Differentiate between verbal and non-verbal test of Intelligence.

10. What is Span of Attention?

Span of attention refers to the number of items or stimuli an individual can grasp or attend to at a single, fleeting moment. For example, in a classic demonstration, if a series of dots is flashed briefly, most people can correctly report about 4 to 5 dots. In terms of memory, the "magical number seven, plus or minus two" (Miller's Law) is often used to describe the number of items a person can hold in their short-term memory at once.

11. What is Self-efficacy?

  • The Effect of Curiosity on Motivation:

Curiosity is an intrinsic motivator—the natural, inborn desire to know, learn, and understand. It drives students to explore new ideas, ask questions, and persist in their studies for the sheer pleasure of discovery.

    • Enhances Engagement: When a student is curious about a topic, they pay more attention, process information more deeply, and are more likely to remember what they learned. For example, a student curious about dinosaurs will voluntarily read books, watch documentaries, and eagerly participate in a related class project. Their motivation comes from within.
    • Promotes a Growth Mindset: Curiosity encourages students to see learning as an exciting challenge rather than a chore. They are more willing to take intellectual risks and embrace complex problems because they are driven by the desire to find answers. This fosters resilience and persistence.

It is the capacity to maintain focused awareness on a selected stimulus. It is a crucial cognitive function for learning and can vary significantly between individuals and situations. While span of attention refers to the number of items we can attend to at once (e.g., 4-5 items), attention span refers to the duration of focus.

Several factors—both internal (subjective) and external (objective)—determine the strength and duration of our attention.

Subjective (Internal) Determinants: These are factors related to the individual's state of mind and personality.

  • Interest: This is the most powerful internal determinant. We naturally pay attention to things that interest us. A student passionate about history can read a historical novel for hours without losing focus.
  • Habit and Training: Regular practice in focusing, such as through meditation or disciplined study, can increase one's attention span. A trained musician can concentrate on a complex piece of music for longer than a novice.
  • Motivation and Need: A strong need or desire to achieve something greatly enhances attention. A medical student studying for a crucial board exam will have a longer attention span for the material than if they were reading it casually.

4. How will you identify creative students in the class? Mention different ways of nurturing creativity.

5. Briefly explain Maslow's Theory of Motivation.

Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is one of the most well-known theories of motivation. It is a humanistic theory that suggests human behavior is motivated by a hierarchy of innate needs. Maslow proposed that individuals must satisfy lower-level needs before they can be motivated to pursue higher-level needs. He visualized this hierarchy as a pyramid, with the most fundamental needs at the base.

  • Level 1: Physiological Needs (Basic Survival): These are the most basic biological needs required for survival, such as food, water, oxygen, sleep, and homeostasis. Motivation to learn is virtually impossible if a student is starving, thirsty, or exhausted. A hungry child cannot focus on a math lesson.
  • Level 2: Safety Needs: Once physiological needs are met, the need for safety and security becomes prominent. This includes personal security, financial security, health, and a sense of stability and order. In a school context, this means a safe, predictable environment free from bullying, fear, and chaos. A student who feels threatened or unsafe in school is highly motivated to seek safety, not education.
  • Level 3: Love and Belongingness Needs (Social Needs): After safety is achieved, the need for social interaction, friendship, love, affection, and a sense of belonging emerges. A student who is ostracized by peers and lives in fear of bullying cannot be expected to be highly motivated to learn algebra.

 

6. Write about Verbal tests of Intelligence.
